Reps pass bill to create development commission for another region

The House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a bill to create the South West Development Commission.

This new body will handle funds from the Federation Account, as well as donations and gifts aimed at rebuilding the region’s infrastructure and addressing ecological and environmental issues.

Once established, the commission will focus on the reconstruction and development of the South West, following the passing of the bill in the Senate in September 2024.

After the House’s approval, the bill will be sent to President Bola Tinubu for final approval.

Although the commission has not been officially established yet, it has already been allocated N140 billion in the 2025 national budget, which was signed into law by the President.

This comes after the President approved similar bills for other regional development commissions in 2024 and 2025, including the North-West, South-East, and North-Central commissions. Each region’s commission has also been allocated substantial funds in the budget, with the North-East receiving the largest share at N240.99 billion.
