Tinubu suddenly cancels planned Lagos celebrations

President Bola Tinubu has called off all official engagements in Lagos today, including his planned attendance at the 2024 Lagos Boat Regatta.

This decision is in honour of the victims of the tragic stampedes in Abuja and Anambra, that claimed the lives of at least 27 people and left many others injured.

Tinubu was set to watch the regatta from his Queen’s Drive residence in Ikoyi, with dignitaries already in attendance.

However, upon receiving updates about the deaths, the President decided to cancel his appearance.

In his remarks, President Tinubu expressed sorrow over the loss of life, urging the state and local authorites to act swiftly to prevent such tragedies in the future.

He also pointed out the similarities between the stampedes and an earlier incident in Ibadan, emphasizing the need for better crowd management during public events.

The President prayed for the souls of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

He further stated that these events could be prevented if safety protocols are followed.

”In a season of joy and celebration, we grieve with fellow citizens mourning the painful losses of their loved ones. Our prayers of divine comfort and healing are with them,” President Tinubu said.

While mourning with the victims’ families, Tinubu also wished the Lagos Boat Regatta organizers a smooth and successful celebration.
