Recent events in Rivers State have raised tensions after President Bola Tinubu declared emergency rule and removed Governor Siminalayi Fubara from office.

To help manage the situation, retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas has been appointed as the sole administrator of the state.

Ibas will visit the State Secretariat on March 24, 2025.

During this visit, he will meet with state commissioners, the Secretary to the State Government, and other top officials.

A government circular from Dr. George C. Nwaeke, Head of the Civil Service, has directed all civil servants to be present for Ibas’s visit.

They are also required to present their staff lists for verification.

The current crisis began when President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, which includes the suspension of the elected government.

This decision has been supported by both the Nigerian Senate and the House of Representatives. However, critics argue that removing an elected government is unconstitutional.

In response to the situation, the Senate approved the formation of a Joint Ad Hoc Committee to monitor the administration of Rivers State.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio mentioned that the emergency rule will be reviewed within six months.

Additionally, a panel of respected Nigerians will be set up to help reconcile differences among the various political groups in the state.
