Trump Makes New Announcement on Ending Ukraine-Russia War
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that Russia and Ukraine are “very close to a deal,” with most key issues already settled.
He has called for top officials from both countries to meet and finalize the agreement.
President Trump, who made the remarks shortly after arriving in Rome for the funeral of Pope Francis, stated that it was time for both sides to “finish off” the deal and bring an end to the ongoing conflict that has claimed thousands of lives.
Writing on his Truth Social platform, Mr Trump described the day as a “good day in talks and meetings with Russia and Ukraine,” noting that significant progress had been made.
“They are very close to a deal, and the two sides should now meet, at very high levels, to finish it off. Most of the major points are agreed to. Stop the bloodshed, NOW. We will be wherever is necessary to help facilitate the END to this cruel and senseless war,” the US president wrote.
Throughout the past week, President Trump had been vocal about his dissatisfaction with the pace of negotiations between the two warring nations.
Only recently, he criticised Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, accusing him of stalling peace talks.
In a post earlier on Wednesday, Trump urged Mr Zelenskyy to “get it done”, suggesting that the Ukrainian leader was negotiating from a weakened position.
The Russia-Ukraine war, which broke out in 2022, has led to widespread humanitarian crises and global economic disruptions.
Efforts by several countries and international bodies to mediate have yielded little results until now, raising cautious optimism that Trump’s intervention could potentially bring a breakthrough.
