Two members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the House of Representatives have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing internal problems within their former party.
Husseini Jallo, who represents Igabi Federal Constituency in Kaduna State, and Adamu Tanko, representing Suleja/Tafa/Gurara Federal Constituency in Niger State, announced their decision during Tuesday’s plenary session.
The Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, read their defection letters, where they explained that ongoing instability in the PDP had made it difficult for them to serve their constituents effectively.
Jallo, in his letter, also pointed out that the leadership style of the Speaker and his belief in national unity influenced his decision to join the APC.
His defection follows that of another Kaduna lawmaker, Amos Magaji, who also left the PDP recently.
Tanko, on the other hand, stated that his move came after wide consultations with political leaders in his constituency.
Their defections sparked reactions from the opposition. The Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, insisted that lawmakers who switch parties should lose their seats, as their election was based on their previous party affiliation.
He referenced a Supreme Court judgment, stating that proper procedures must be followed for defection.
Deputy Minority Leader, Ali Isa, also opposed the move, saying the affected lawmakers should either withdraw their defection letters or prepare for legal action.
He maintained that the PDP remains strong and is not in crisis.
He further stated that lawmakers who leave their party should resign and seek a fresh mandate from their constituents.
