The University of Benin, UNIBEN, has elected a new set of executives for its Students’ Union Government (SUG) with Nmoye Israel aka Cyano, a 400 level student of Dentistry emerging the president.
The election held on Valentine’s Day, Tuesday 14th February, 2023, with students voting at different polling locations within the school.
Dockaysworld correspondents report that the election was generally peaceful though there were isolated instances of minor disturbances and late voting.
Israel clinched the victory with a total of 2,692 valid votes cast to beat his closest rival and second-time aspirant, Mr. Ogunseri Scott from the Faculty of Physical Sciences, who garnered a total of 2,645 votes to emerge second.
Students’ credibility to vote was predicated on their status of school fees with only those who’d paid being allowed to vote in both Ugbowo and Ekehuan campuses.
The University Management had earlier issued a statement, as part of the electoral guidelines, that only students who paid their tuition fee as at 4pm Monday 13th February, 2023, would be allowed to vote or participate in the exercise.
