The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has assured that crossdresser Idris Okuneye, known as Bobrisky, will be safe from sexual abuse as he serves his six-month prison sentence in the male section of its custodial facility.
This decision follows Bobrisky’s sentencing by Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court for Naira mutilation, a case that gained attention due to Bobrisky’s gender identity and social media discussions about his gender transition.
Despite concerns about Bobrisky’s safety in a male-designated facility, correctional officers have assured the public that measures will be taken to protect him from potential harm.
A spokesperson for the correctional service in Lagos said:
“Since he admitted to being a male in court, then we have to abide by what was submitted in court.
He shouldn’t be afraid of sexual assault from other male inmates because our men can give him protection.”
