President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero disclosed that President Bola Tinubu proposed raising the new minimum wage to ₦250,000, but this offer was turned down by the labour organization.
Ajaero mentioned that Tinubu was willing to agree to the ₦250,000 minimum wage on the condition that the government could increase the price of petrol.
However, after careful deliberation, the organized labour decided to reject the proposal to protect Nigerians from the potential hardships that a petrol price hike could bring.
Ajaero explained that accepting the ₦70,000 offer was in the best interest of the people.
“Accepting ₦70,000 was the best way to save Nigerians from further hardship,” he stated on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme.
During the meeting, President Tinubu had proposed, “I will give you ₦250,000 if you allow me to increase the pump price of petroleum products,” but the labour movement needed to consult on the matter.
Ultimately, they replied the President, “No.”
Ajaero emphasized that the labour movement is willing to make sacrifices without exacerbating the suffering of Nigerians by increasing petrol prices.
Meanwhile the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) will hold a crucial meeting by 11am today to discuss the ₦70,000 minimum wage proposal.
Speaking on the development, a source in the meeting told Vanguard that organized Labour would hold NEC meeting tomorrow by 11am to present the ₦70,000 new minimum wage to them.
The source said NLC would decide whether to accept FG’s ₦70,000 minimum wage or decline after presenting it to their member’s tomorrow.
