Former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said that nothing extraordinary would happen if the Rivers State House of Assembly decides to remove Governor Siminalayi Fubara from office.
Speaking at a media event in Abuja, Wike stated that impeachment is part of the legal process and is not a criminal offense.
He insisted that if Fubara had committed any act that warranted impeachment, the lawmakers had the constitutional right to proceed.
He also dismissed claims that removing the governor would lead to unrest, saying such concerns were baseless.
He said, “If you have committed an offence to be impeached, what’s wrong? Is it a criminal offence? It’s provided in the constitution. Am I a member of the Assembly?
“If you have committed an infraction of the constitution and the Assembly deems it fit to say, you should be impeached.
“I have heard people say: ‘Oh, if they impeach him, there will be a breakdown of law and order’. Rubbish! Nothing will happen.”
‘Go And Present The Budget’
Nyesom Wike advised Fubara, to present the state budget and submit the list of commissioners, saying that peace can only be achieved when the right actions are taken.
He made these remarks while criticizing Fubara’s handling of governance, particularly in relation to the state House of Assembly crisis.
“What is peace? What is more important than letting the right thing be done? When the right thing is done, there will be peace. But if the right thing is not done, how can you talk about peace?
“Go present the budget; go submit the list of the commissioners.”
He further accused Fubara of being responsible for the destruction of the Rivers State House of Assembly complex, which has led lawmakers to conduct sittings in their private residences.
“He (Fubara) brought the Assembly complex down. Assembly now sits in their residences. If you are coming, they have children; they have to prepare themselves. You cannot just go and then open the gate saying, ‘I’m coming to present the budget.’ Nonsense, rubbish, who is doing that? Playing to the gallery,” Wike stated.
Wike Speaks On Rivers LG Election
Nyesom Wike also dismissed plans to hold local government elections in Rivers State on August 27, 2025, insisting that the process will not succeed.
He criticized the Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Justice Adolphus Enebeli (retd.), accusing him of lacking credibility.
He alleged that Enebeli hurried to the court instead of responding to a summons from the State Assembly.
According to Wike, the situation mirrors a scenario where a federal institution, like the National Assembly, invites an official for questioning, only for that official to take legal action instead of appearing before lawmakers.
He claimed that the RSIEC chairman is more interested in personal gains than conducting a fair election, questioning his understanding of legal rulings related to the matter.
Wike, who appointed Enebeli in the past, admitted that he could be blamed for the situation but remained firm in his stance that the planned local government election would not hold.
No Plans To Leave PDP – Wike
Nyesom Wike reaffirmed his commitment to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), dismissing speculations that he may leave the opposition party.
Wike stated that he is not one to back down from challenges, emphasizing that his loyalty to the PDP remains unwavering despite political tensions.
“I don’t run away from a fight. I will not leave the PDP,” Wike declared.
